MVL WD1 home fixture

Venue: Woodchurch HS, start 11:00am

Team: Katie Leppington, Helena Hinch, Abi Larway, Imi Newall, Lily Prosser, Liv Stewart, Sadie Capstick

Result: Lost 2-3, 25-21, 25-20, 13-25, 22-25, 6-15

Set 1,… Wirral receiving, first serve comes over, good pass in, Liv puts a lovely set up to 4, Abi smashes down a great cross-court kill. What a terrific start. As the set progressed we fell behind mainly because our first ball wasn’t good enough but Abi got us back into  contention with a great run of serves, Katie and Abi put away some good winners, our cover was solid and we took the set to 21.

Set 2… Abi started us of with a good run of serves and although Royals improved they never got back into game.

Set 3… Lazy, fell asleep, mistakes everywhere never got going, went down 13-25.

Set 4… Royals pulled out a lead with some strong serving but our girls fought hard and come back from 23-16 down to put up a strong challenge. Lost to an unforced error at 22-24.

Set 5… Strong Royals serving took them into a 7-0 lead and despite our girls putting up a good fight Royals kept scrambling the ball back and we couldn’t recover the deficit.

Wirral should not have lost this game after dominating the first two sets, but Royals were able to call on their experience and improved as the match progressed. Once again it was service receive that let us down as we were stronger on the net and covered the court pretty well. Never mind, it was a good close game, our girls played well - very well in parts - and put in a really good performance especially considering we had to rearrange the starting line-up and system to cover for missing players.
